FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS . . .
The FOID card was created in 1968, by the FOID Act, as a way to identify those persons eligible to possess and acquire firearms and firearm ammunition as part of a public safety initiative in the State of Illinois. The FOID card is NOT a “conceal and carry” card.
Unless specifically exempted by statute, any Illinois resident who acquires or possesses firearm or firearm ammunition within the State must have in their possession a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card issued in his or her name. Nonresidents are not required to have a FOID card. New Illinois residents have sixty calendar days after obtaining an Illinois driver’s license or Illinois Identification Card to obtain a FOID card.
You must fill out the application on the Illinois State Police Website. https://www.ispfsb.com
No, you do not need one to attend a class led by a certified firearms instructor. You cannot bring ammo or a firearm with you to the class. You must rent a pistol and buy the ammo from the instructor. Call before coming so we can set that up for you.
It depends on the date of the course you will be taking and the availability of the range at those times.
No, we have a variety of handguns for our students to use. If you don’t have one, don’t buy one until after the class, we will help you to get the gun that fits you properly. Ammunition is often included in the cost of the class, but be sure and read the class description to determine if you will need to bring ammunition with you to class.
